Yiskor
Yizkor means remember, and is at this time that we pray for the ones who we have lost.
A prayer is recited as part of the service four times during the year:
- Following the Torah and Haftarah readings on Yom Kippur
- On the last day of Passover
- On the second day of Shavout
- On the eighth day of Sukkot (Shemini Atzeret)
This is based on the Jewish belief in the eternity of the soul. Although a soul cannot perform good deeds or charitable acts, it is believed that praying for them can benefit the souls of the living.
