5 Ways to Re-Connect with Family
Families drift apart and become estranged for multiple reasons. It could be illness, tragedy, distance, or disagreements. Often life gets in the way, and we can stay out of touch, but it’s never too late to re-connect. Once you’ve taken that first step to reach out, coming together again as a family simply involves communicating honestly and sharing new experiences together.
Here are five ways to reconnect with family:
1. Be honest
Building a foundation of trust is critical to bonding with family again. Before reaching out, be aware of why you want to reconnect, what this relationship means to you, and where you want it to go. In doing so, you’ll need to be honest and admit any past mistakes or betrayals you’ve made with family members and ask that they do the same. Communication is key to letting go of the past and enabling you to create a new future together.
2. Let go of expectations
Reconnecting with family isn’t always going to be easy. There was a reason you drifted apart, and it could be because you are at different places in your lives or you just don’t have a lot in common. Remember, everyone has a unique personality, and no family is perfectly happy all the time. One way to bond again is to let go of expectations you may have of family members. Decide to accept them the way they are, and they may do the same in turn for you. Choose to love them as they are, and you may discover enjoying your time together as never before.
3. Forgive each other
Grievances can tear a family apart and fester for a long time. Letting go of these and forgiving each other can jumpstart a new, positive path together. Forgiving doesn’t mean you excuse someone’s behavior and must accept it in the future, but it does mean you are open to putting the past behind you and exploring a new relationship. Forgiving a family member for previous wrongs is a gift of peace to yourself, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you need to re-connect with them.
4. Create new family traditions
Traditions matter in families. They provide a sense of belonging and comfort while connecting us to our heritage. Working together to create a new tradition can help strengthen family bonds, reinforce family values, and most importantly—create special memories. It can be a shared vacation experience or something simple like cooking a holiday recipe together or celebrating a fun national day, like Spaghetti Day, Science Fiction Day, or Donut Day.
5. Volunteer together
Studies show that giving back leads us to happier and more grateful lives. Volunteering together as a family is a powerful shared experience that can increase your appreciation for what you have. It also can boost empathy for others that in turn could help you reflect with more empathy on your own family.
Our lives get busy and it’s easy to let relationships fade away. Taking the time to reach out and rebuild family bonds can bring a sense of fulfillment to our lives. The simple actions of just “being present” together, listening to one another’s needs, and having empathy toward each other can create a sturdy foundation for rekindling family relationships that last a lifetime.
